Studies on medicinal applications of psychedelics ceased entirely in the United States when the Controlled Substances Act was passed in 1970. LSD and many other psychedelics were placed into the most restrictive “Schedule I” category by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. Schedule I compounds are claimed to possess “a high potential for abuse and the potential to create severe psychological and/or physical dependence” and have “no currently accepted medical use”,28 effectively rendering them illegal to use in the United States for all purposes. Despite objections from the scientific community, authorized research into therapeutic applications of psychedelic drugs had been discontinued worldwide by the 1980s. Nowadays, with renewed interests in psychedelic compounds and their potential to treat conditions such as addiction, anxiety, and PTSD, LSD has again become the subject of academic interest. While the scheduling of the substance makes it difficult to facilitate clinical trials where LSD is administered therapeutically, researchers have still been able to collect anecdotal data from individuals who use LSD in order to further study the substance.

Later Wilson wrote to Carl Jung, praising the results and recommending it as validation of Jung’s spiritual experience.58 According to Wilson, the session allowed him to re-experience a spontaneous spiritual experience he had had years before, which had enabled him to overcome his own alcoholism. In the United States, the Central Intelligence Agency tested the drug on subjects for different reasons. It was used in interrogations to see if it would make people tell the truth, or remember things they had forgotten.

Mystical Experiences

The last country to produce LSD legally (until 1975) was Czechoslovakia;citation needed during the 1960s, high-quality LSD was imported from the communist country to California, a fact appreciated by Leary in The Politics of Ecstasy. How Long Does An LSD Trip Last?

Another fundamental way in which LSD is known to work on the brain is by inhibiting the default mode network (DMN). The DMN is not a physical part of the brain but rather a system of connected regions that play a role in introspective activities. Daydreaming, thinking about oneself or others, or ruminating on the past or future are when the DMN is most active. LSD also fires up the sympathetic nervous system, which is involved in regulation of the heart, muscles, and glands in a response to stressful situations. As a result, an LSD trip can increase sweating, elevate heart rate and blood pressure, and even lift blood glucose levels.
